Day 5 Florida Trail

Wednesday, March 11

Woke up: 7:30a.m.
Left Camp: 8:45a.m.
Stopped: 5:45
Total Miles: 18

Rough start to the day because our alarms never went off. No worries though, we got our stuff packed up, ate breakfast and then we were on our way. Temperatures reached high 80's.

We passed 4 hikers. Out of everyone  besides the lady that was hiking the whole Florida trail, we were hiking the farthest. I couldn't be happier that we were going this far of a distance because other backpackers were impressed by it. They were even more impressed when I told them I had never been camping in the woods before let alone hiking every day for a week straight.

We stopped at Juniper Springs for a short break. Juniper Springs is natural spring in the Ocala National Forest (popular tourist spot). While we were there we shared our story of where we were coming from and how much farther we had left.

We started talking to this guy that was just there for the day to relax before he had to go to some meetings the next day. He was telling us he had a house in Zone 1 of Yellowstone. Zone 1 is where they take the most aggressive grizzly bears and they put them all in the same area so the Rangers could keep track of them.

After swimming for a bit, I noticed I had a tic just above my right knee. The man I just spoke of asked if I had a lighter to try and burn the tic off. Well, after a few minutes of burning myself and my leg hair off I decided that wasn't the best option.

Our new friend then went to his bags and came back with moisturizer and he said to cover the tic with it. After smothering the tic with the moisturizer the tic started to suffocate and it let go of my leg. I was then able to take if off and I burned it to its death. I couldn't be more thankful that I had met that man.
